Catherine Kirby Jensen, 96, died peacefully in her home in Moore, Idaho, of natural causes due to age Saturday, March 17, 2012.
She was born Feb. 3, 1916, in Tooele, Utah, to John Henderson Kirby and Agnes Johnston Kirby of Scotland. Her family moved to Blackfoot when she was 3 years old, where she grew up. Her father passed away shortly after they moved to Blackfoot. She was raised with her seven siblings by her single mother. She graduated from high school in 1934, and took several months of nurses' training in Idaho Falls.
She married Joseph Doyle Jensen on Nov. 26, 1937, in Salt Lake City in the LDS temple.
She was active in the LDS church, serving in various callings such as ward Primary president, stake Primary presidency, family history consultant, nursery leader, teacher in Primary, Sunday School and Young Women. She is fondly remembered by the youth she taught through the years. She and Doyle were workers in the Idaho Falls Temple for many years before and after their Family History Mission in Suva, Fiji from 1989 to 1991.
Catherine was active in the community. She served as PTA president, hosting a memorable waffle bake supper as a fundraiser. She was also instrumental in getting the swimming pool in Arco.
Catherine loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was proud of their achievements and enjoyed having them around.
She actively participated with her husband on the farm, helping in the hay, cooking for harvest crews and in the potatoes. She also helped by marketing eggs and milk and starting bum lambs for the children. In later years, it pleased her to milk the cows for Doyle so that he could have a break; usually it was so he could go fishing.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed baking, canning, counted cross-stitching, flower gardening, family history, working in the temple, teaching, various church callings and puzzles in general. Catherine enjoyed life to the very end. She was known for her quick wit and sense of humor; however, she never gained an appreciation for mice! She is survived by two sons, Joseph Doyle Jensen Jr. of Pocatello and Kirby (Sharon) Jensen of Moore; and five daughters, Gwendoyln (Sylvan) Butler of Rexburg, Sylvia (Dale) Jardine of Moore, Katherine (Glenn) Perrins of Moses Lake, Wash., Laura (Roy) Drew of Sandy, Utah, and Cynthia (Kim) Davies of Moore; 39 grandchildren; 82 great-grandchildren with six on the way, and one great-great-grandchild with one on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, all eight of her siblings, one stillborn child and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 23, at the LDS Stake Center in Moore. The family will meet with friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Anderson Family Funeral Home, north of Arco, and at 10 a.m. Friday before the funeral at the LDS church in Moore. Interment will be at Lost River Cemetery.
