Eldest son of John H. Kirby and Agnes Johnston Kirby.
He arrived from Scotland in 1913.
He first married Pearl Edwards (1909-1953) in 1928 and had one son.
He second married Virginia Beacham Watson (1907-1987) in 1945 and had one daughter.
He last married Edith Andersen (1912-1984)in 1963.
He had 4 brothers and 4 sisters. One brother, also named John Henderson (Jr.), predeceased him. His mother was reported to have said she loved her husband so much she would have named all of her sons after him.
After the war he and his wife Virginia settled in Los Angeles County where he attended Pasadena City College, getting his AA degree in Animal Husbandry. He began his own wholesale nursery behind their home, and was very successful. When he later married Edith and had a home in Salt Lake City, he kept a greenhouse in the back yard filled with plants. He grew many varieties of ferns, philodendrons and orchids.
