Mrs. Laura J. Smith, 83, resident of Nederland for more than a quarter of a century and a former resident of Port Arthur, died in her home in Nederland shortly before noon Monday. Mrs. Smith was a member of a pioneer family of Cameron parish, La. She moved to this section of Texas many years ago, however. Mrs. Smith's brother donated the site for the Baptist church in Nederland, and it is in this church some time Tuesday that final rites for her will be held. This church was formerly named the Peveto Baptist church, Peveto being Mrs. Smith's family name. Surviving Mrs. Smith are three sons, E. Kirby Smith, former Jefferson county official; Preston C. of Port Arthur and E.T. of Nederland. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral rites, in charge of Carroll-Wallace, are incomplete. The body will be taken to the family home at 6 o'clock Monday evening to lie in state until the hour of the funeral service Tuesday.
