Evangelist. She was born in rural Concordia, Missouri to German farmers, Joseph and Emma Kuhlman. Kathryn had her first calling during a revival meeting when she was 14. Her older sister and brother-in-law were practicing evangelists holding area tent revivals. At age 16, she joined them, assisting during services, as they traveled around the country. After the first summer, Kathryn pursued formal religious training by enrolling at the Simpson Bible School in Seattle. Upon completion she rejoined the Parrotts, only now she was doing tent revivals while receiving an opportunity to preach. At age 21, Kathryn was on her own, a roving evangelist, plying the states of Idaho, Utah, and Colorado. Kathryn Kuhlman finally settled down in Denver in 1933 with the establishment of the Kuhlman Revival Tabernacle and two years later constructed a 2,000 seat structure to house the venture. Kathryn used the media and established an influential radio ministry. A scandal ensued by her relationship with a still married fellow evangelist. He divorced his wife to marry her which destroyed the Denver ministry. Their marriage ended after six years. Even though Kathryn was now a divorcee she started anew once again. In 1946 at a Franklin, Pennsylvania revival meeting, a woman claimed to be cured. Kathryn added the phenomenon of spiritual healing to her ministry calling it "Miracle Services." She would call out a specific disorder and a person sitting in a certain area of the auditorium claimed to be cured. She again developed a daily radio ministry in 1948 and moved to Pittsburgh establishing her residence as well as a ministry headquarters while conducting services in Carnegie Hall and the First Presbyterian Church. She was featured in a seven-page article in Redbook magazine and was catapulted into the national limelight. This led her to further expand to Southern California where her congregation met at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium which proved too small. Moving to the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium, she regularly filled its 7,000 seats for ten years while continuing to live in Pittsburgh and conducting religious meetings and even expanding into television producing more than five hundred telecasts for the BAS network. Her strenuous schedule took its toll as she was diagnosed with a heart condition. She would battle the problem of an over sized heart for the next twenty years. Kathryn preached her last message in 1975 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Three weeks later, she lay dying at Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma after open heart surgery. With Oral and Evelyn Roberts at her side, she was gone at age sixty eight.
