Happilona was born to Zeri and Rachel Cushman in Franklin, VT in 1821. She married John Adams in 1841 and had 3 children. The family moved to Ceredo VA in 1857 as part of the Eli Thayer colony of Aboloitionists. John was active for the State of West Virginia once the war started. He recruited men for the Union Army. It was in this endeavor that he was eventually captured and killed by Rebel Guerrillas after May 17, 1864. Happilonia married George Barney in 1867 then returned to Vermont soon after. After he passed away, she went to Massachusetta to live with her daughter and family where she died in 1907.
