George Sutherland was born in Weldford, Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada to James and Mary (LAWSON) Sutherland on May 23, 1865. He left home at age 12, and worked one year on a farm in New Brunswick. He also worked as a logger and river driver.

George met Isabella Jane Davidson, possibly in Quebec, and subsequently took up railroading. The couple emigrated to the United States and were married on July 9, 1889, in Bloomfield, Essex, Vermont. George's occupation listed at the time of his marriage was 'Freight Checker.' The couple had five children including Joseph JE (b. 1890), George E (b. 1892), Mary I (b. 1894), Georgianna RF (b. 1896), and Robert H (b. 1898).

George was a conductor on the Boston and Maine Railroad, and worked out of Woodsville, New Hampshire. George's oldest son, Joseph, became an engineer on the Boston and Maine Railroad.
