Robert (Bob) Harold SUTHERLAND was born on October 10, 1898, youngest of five children to George SUTHERLAND (b. 1865, New Brunswick, Canada) and Isabella Jane DAVIDSON Sutherland (b. 1865, Quebec, Canada). Robert's place of birth was Lancaster, New Hampshire, and he attended and graduated in 1916 from Woodsville High School (Woodsville, New Hampshire).

Robert attended Yale University, majored in organic chemistry, and was considered a member of the class of 1919 Yale Sheffield Scientific School. He enlisted in the Army at the end of the War in 1918, and was honorably discharged that same year.

For many years Robert worked as a rubber chemist at several large companies in the east and mid-west United States. During World War II, Robert worked at the Boston Naval Shipyard, met and married his first wife, Lorna Gould CORBETT (1940), and the couple had two surviving children, John Sutherland and Susan Sutherland.

During many years that followed WW II, Robert worked as an independent carpenter in the Boston, Massachusetts area. In 1967, Robert married (second) Georgianna VANCOUR Garfield in Vermont.

Robert lived his remaining years in northern New Hampshire and northern Vermont, and died at the Veterans Hospital (VAMROC) in Hartford, Windsor, Vermont in 1978 at 80 years of age. He is buried with his second wife in St. Johnsbury, Vermont.
