OBITUARY :
HARRY W. APPENZELLAR, JR., 91, of Chambersburg, Pa., died Thursday, March 15, 2012, at his home.
Born May 11, 1920, in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Harry W. and Nellie M. Henneberger Appenzellar.
He graduated with certification in preflight training from Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., and obtained his pilot's license. He then served with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He had also flown for Madam Chiang Kai-Shek during the Sino-Japanese War in the 1940s.
Early in his life, he was employed at the former Fairchild Industries in Hagerstown, Md., and later retired from Boeing Aircraft, where he worked as a production engineer.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 46, both in Chambersburg. Harry had a great love for life and enjoyed traveling, country and gospel music, and airplanes. He was an avid deer hunter.
His wife, Mary J. Pangle Appenzellar, whom he married in 1944, preceded him in death on Oct. 7, 2010.
He is survived by his brother, David Appenzellar of Hagerstown; his foster daughter, Joanne O'Neill, her husband, Tom, and their children, T.J., Doug and Jesse, all of New London, Pa.; and his goddaughters, Tina Frazier, her husband, Frank, and their son, Dylan, of Greencastle, Pa., and Lita Naessig and her husband, Fred, also of Greencastle.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
