Homer Stearns, 42 years old, who lived at 1010 Hickory street, was accidentally killed at 9:20 a.m. today while helping cut logs in a tract of timber near Shawneetown. He and Jess Cornman, employed by the Garver Lumber Co. here, had gone there earlier to start a job of sawing down trees and cutting then into logs.
It was said one tree had been processed, and when the men sawed down a second, a branch from a nearby tree in some manner was whipped around by the falling tree and struck Mr. Stearns on the back of the neck or head. The timber is on a farm owned by Mrs. Mary Erley, 1428 Whitener street.
The body was brought to the Haman Funeral Home. Coroner J.F. Sigmund will conduct and inquest tonight.
Mr. Stearns was single. He is survived by a number of relatives, including one brother and two sisters.
