From the Loveland, Colorado newspaper, Oct 3, 1879:
"It was with unfeigned sorrow we learned of the death of another son of Mr. James Sullivan in the region of Ft. Fetterman. This time it is Joseph R., an intelligent young man of bright promise who has been taken off. He was injured by a "bucking" horse on the 16th inst., and although he had excellent surgical attendance, he expired on the 18th inst. Mr. Sullivan and his son William went north upon getting telegraphic information of the sad event, but the loved son and brother ?? before their arrival. They could not have even had the satisfaction of bringing his body home for burial."
Per family records, he was buried in an unmarked grave at Ft. Fetterman, but was later moved to Loveland.
