Wife of James (engraved on her stone)

Susannah was the ninth child of the ten born to James McDowell and Margaret "Peggy" Dickson. She was married to James Sullivan in 1842 at the age of 17. She gave birth to 3 children in West Virginia. In 1850 she, her husband and their three children moved to Iowa at the same time that her eldest sister, Isabella McDowell Nickell (20 years older) moved there with her husband and children. Susannah gave birth to 3 more children by the time the 'Panic of 1857' caused her husband James to leave the family in Iowa while he sought gold in Colorado. During the next two summers, James again left her in Iowa with all of the children except their oldest son, Joseph, while he went to Montana and Colorado in an attempt to make enough money to save their farm, which they lost anyway. During that time, Susannah gave birth to two more children (8 total) and suffered the loss of 3 year old daughter Mary Virginia.

In 1862, James along with he and Susannah's 7 remaining children, moved to Colorado. It is not known whether Susannah went with them. What is known is that their descendants have no more records or knowledge of Susannah after that time.

In this plot (row 9), for Susan Sullivan, are her nephew, James McDowell Nickell (son of Isabella) and his wife, Elizabeth McClure Nickell. Because of this, I have decided that Susan is most likely my ancestor Susannah McDowell Sullivan. Further research will be carried on.
