Funeral services for Virgil "Speck" Thomas Haggard Sr., 95, of Shelby were held Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Rockdale with Pastor Linda Mosley officiating.

Mr. Haggard died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011 at Bellville General Hospital.

He was born May 16, 1915, in Manchester, Tennessee, to Thomas Jefferson and Rena Mae (May) Haggard.

He married Mildred Morrison on Aug. 5, 1939, in Cameron.

Mr. Haggard retired from Alcoa in Rockdale in 1975 where he worked as a pot room operator.

He was also a longtime farmer who loved to hunt, fish, take care of his animals and grow his garden. He also enjoyed riding his horse "Smokey" and was a member of the Lee County Sheriff's Posse for many years.

Mr. Haggard moved to Shelby following his retirement from Alcoa and married Vallie Trouper in March of 1986. They enjoyed playing dominoes, fishing and working in the yard. She preceded him in death on Dec. 26, 2001.

Mr. Haggard was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Shelby.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mildred Haggard; his second wife, Vallie Haggard; a daughter, Maxine Haggard; a son, V.T. Haggard Jr.; two sisters, Beulah Haggard and Fannie Simmons; two half-brothers, Kenneth Grey and David Grey; and a half-sister, Lucille Price.

Survivors include four daughters, also, 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 13 greatgreat grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
