Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A real estate agent and merchant before the outbreak of the war, he was commissioned as a Colonel, US Volunteers in the Union Army Quartermaster Department after offering his services. He was first placed in charge of purchasing and supplying forage of all the Union forces in the Eastern theatre, then as named Chief of the 5th Division in the Quartermaster General's office. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war". He was the older brother of Union Brevet General Theodore S. Brown.
