Son of abolitionist William H. Brown (1796-1867) who helped prevent Illinois from becoming a slave state in the 1820s, and Harriet Seward Brown (1807-1883). His brothers, Samuel Lockwood Brown, and Theodore Frelinghuysen Brown, were brevet generals in the Civil War.
