Lyle DeLauder Chapline, Sr. was born in Harpers Ferry, WV on August 27, 1896. He was the son of Charles Luther Chapline and Marietta DeLauder Chapline. In 1900 the Chaplines moved to Baltimore, Maryland.
Lyle's paternal grandparents were William R. Chapline and Margaret Ann Hout Chapline of Shepherdstown, West Virginia. His maternal grandparents were Lloyd DeLauder and Julia Hyatt DeLauder of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
Lyle enlisted in the Maryland National Guard in April 10, 1917 a few days after the United States declared war on Germany and entered World War I. On June 21, 1917 Lyle married Catharine Manning. In June 1918 Lyle was shipped to France. The inscription on his grave marker at Arlington National Cemetery says:
PFC, HQ Company, Maryland 115th Infantry, 29th Division, Intelligence: Observer and Map Draftsman, Meuse-Argonne, France, World War I, 15 June 1918 - 24 May 1919.
After the war Lyle and Catherine lived in Baltimore where they raised eight children and Lyle worked as a postal employee for a number of years. In the 1940's he worked as a welder at the Naval Gun Factory and the Naval Ordinance Plant in Alexandria, Virginia. Eventually Lyle and Catherine moved to Falls Church, Virginia. Lyle died on August 3, 1964 a few weeks shy of his 68th birthday. He and Catherine had 28 grand children.
