Richard Walton Winslow was born on October 15, 1832 in Ontario, Canada, a son of Torry D. and Theressa "Thura" (Burns) Winslow.

NOTE: There are 4 different years that Richard Walton Winslow was supposed to have been born; 1827, 1828, 1832 and 1835. The U.S. Army had him recorded for 3 of those dates.

A genealogy researcher (now deceased) Lois L. Lehl, says of Richard Winslow: Richard Walton Winslow was born in Bermuda, Canady on October 15, 1827. He died November 8, 1912, and is buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Quitman, Missouri, which is across the road from the Quitman Cemetery.

He was married August 25, 1859 at 12 Mile Grove, Will County, near Joliet, Illinois, to Mary Clark Murray. While he was an infant, he came to Illinois with his family and lived there for 40 years except for the time he served in the Union Army. Richard enlisted in Company K, 100th Illinois Infantry on the 30th of August 1862 at 12 Mile Grove, Illinois. He served with the Illinois Volunteer Engineers unit the whole period. He was discharged June 30, 1865. Upon entrance into the service he was described as six foot, one and one half inches in height, hair - dark, complexion - dark, eyes - grey.

From Illinois he moved to Beaver Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota in 1867 and then returned to Illinois for one year in 1883. He moved to Missouri in 1884 and lived there for the remainder of his life. He and Mary Clark Murray had ten children. Two of their children died in infancy.

Organized at Joliet, Ill., and mustered in August 30, 1862. Left the state for Louisville, Ky., September 2, 1862. Attached to 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, Army of Kentucky, Dept. of the Ohio, to October, 1862. 15th Brigade, 6th Division, 2nd Army Corps, Army of the Ohio, to November, 1862. 1st Brigade, 1st Division, Left Wing 14th Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland, to January, 1863. 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 21st Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland, to October, 1863. 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 4th Army Corps, to June, 1865.

Mustered out at Nashville, Tenn., June 12, and discharged at Chicago, Illinois, June 30, 1865.
Regiment lost during service, 7 Officers and 73 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 134 Enlisted men by disease. Total 214.
