Richard Walton Winslow was born on October 15, 1832 in Ontario, Canada, a son of Torry D. and Theressa "Thura" (Burns) Winslow.

A genealogy researcher (now deceased) Lois L. Lehl, says of Richard Winslow: Richard Walton Winslow was born in Bermuda, Canady on October 15, 1827. He died November 8, 1912, and is buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Quitman, Missouri, which is across the road from the Quitman Cemetery.
He was married August 25, 1859 at 12 Mile Grove, Will County, near Joliet, Illinois, to Mary Clark Murray. While he was an infant, he came to Illinois with his family and lived there for 40 years except for the time he served in the Union Army. Richard enlisted in Company K, 100th Illinois Infantry on the 30th of August 1862 at 12 Mile Grove, Illinois. He served with the Illinois Volunteer Engineers unit the whole period. He was discharged June 30, 1865. Upon entrance into the service he was described as six foot, one and one half inches in height, hair - dark, complexion - dark, eyes - grey.
From Illinois he moved to Beaver Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota in 1867 and then returned to Illinois for one year in 1883. He moved to Missouri in 1884 and lived there for the remainder of his life. He and Mary Clark Murray had ten children. Two of their children died in infancy.
