Laura Ann Ford, daughter of Thomas Ford, was orphaned sometime before 1856. She and sister Emeline tried to gain custody of their three younger brothers, Robert, Henry, and Thomas, but were unsuccessful. Laura married Alfred E Mathews sometime before 1866. They had three children: a son who died young, Gertrude Mercy, and Almon Ford. By 1875 Alfred left the family. Laura and Gertrude moved in with Laura's cousin Lucinda Humason Shoff. Son Almon was raised by Lucinda's sister Evalina Humason Stewart. Laura died from an illness in 1888. She is buried in Payne's Corners near daughter Gertrude, but I do not believe she has a headstone.

The remains of Laura Ford Mathews, of Cortland, mother of Gertie and Allie Mathews, of this place, were interred here Tuesday, Dec. 4. She had been a member of the M.E. church from her youth. Her age was 52 years. The services were conducted by Rev. Cushman. She leaves many friends here besides her son and daughter to mourn her loss.
