In 1785, Andrew Buchanan died and left Rachel (Gilleylen) Buchanan as a young widow with six small children to raise. Life soon led her to a second marriage though and she became the bride of William Clingan. William was a very distinguished man having been a member of the Continental Congress 1777-1779, and one of the first signers of the Articles of Confederationin 1778. He appears to have been well received by his step children because at least two of them gave their sons the middle name Clingan, presumably after William. The happy union was not to last long however because William Clingan died on May 9, 1790. On June 15th of that year Rachel petitioned the Orphans' Court of Chester County, Pennsylvania, to appoint guardians for her children. Rachel lived to the good old age of 86+ years, outliving both of her husbands by over half a century. Rachel is buried with her son Isaac's family in the Pequea Presbyterian Churchyard, Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. (Research by Candice Buchanan, 5th great-granddaughter.)
