Thank you for visiting dearest brave Tom. Your visit means so very much to us. God bless.

This memorial is maintained for the children and grandchildren of LTC. Thomas H. Powell.

༻✿ Thomas Herman Powell was born in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio on June 1, 1919 - Died  June 21,1999
Buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was the son of John and Rachel Edith Hale Powell. Tom married Ann Elizabeth Schier Powell in Oklahoma City, OK on February 23, 1943.

My dad and mother corresponded by mail, after meeting on a blind date in Oklahoma City. My mother was in Registered Nurses Training at St. Anthony's hospital in Oklahoma City, and my dad was training at a nearby Oklahoma Air Force Base, Will Rogers Field. They married (I believe it was) in St. James Catholic Church in matching blue suits, as my dad was heading back to the war.

Our dad was quite a war hero it seems. He flew over 24 missions in North Africa. Living  conditions there were horrible the records state. He then went to England and flew more than the required 25 bombing missions over Germany. He also told us he was in the first flight on D-Day over Normandy. Miraculously he survived. Many of his friends did not.  He also told us on one mission over Germany he took a direct hit to his plane and a shell went "straight thru" it. He promised his crew he'd get them back to England. . . and again miraculously he did! He always thought it was my mother's prayers that kept him safe. She went to Mass every single day while she lived with Grandma & Grandaddy Powell in San Diego and prayed for him. They had a church (St. John the Baptist) right down the block from their house. Dad never told us exactly how many missions he flew, but we think he did many times over the required 25 missions, for which he was awarded medals.

Known children of Thomas Herman and Ann Elizabeth Schier Powell's Children:
1) Rita Rae Powell Ward, born in Springfield, OH, on May 24, 1946 (Died Ft. Walton Beach, FL Sept 7, 2009 - lung cancer she was a heavy smoker)  Divorced in 1991.  3 children.
2) Maureen Powell, (no middle name) born San Diego, CA, on January 2, 1948- Married March 15, 1969 - 4 children.
3) Lizabeth Ann Powell Jones, born San Diego, CA, March 15, 1951 - Married, No children.
4) Cecile Marie Powell, born San Diego, CA December 17, 1953 No Marriage, no children. (Died Albuquerque, NM, March 23, 2005) Registered Nurse and Journalism major. Very good writer!
5) Teresa Louise Powell Schumann, born Lincoln, Nebraska, September 14, 1955 - Married 3 children.
6) Suzanne Mary Powell Vaillancourt, born Lincoln, Nebraska, December 10, 1956 - Married no children - 2 step children.
7) Thomas William Powell, born Lincoln, Nebraska, March 14, 1962. Married with 3 children.

From what I understand dad went above and beyond his duty during the war. I believe my dad returned to the US after the war sometime in mid 1945. Our dad went back into the Air Force from San Diego after the war and we lived in Nebraska, Karachi, Pakistan, then Peshawar, Pakistan and his last assignment was in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

My dad, Tom Powell, passed away on June 21, 1999 from a short bout with cancer. He was a lot of fun. I think we all kind of inherited that trait.

May Tom Powell rest in heavenly peace forever in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. May my Dad be blessed forever.

☆ Tom was the first to land in Africa during the first flight into Africa during WW II. While in flight he got separated from the other fliers. He tried to find them ahead of him to rejoin the squadron but could not find them. He figured he was in the correct area and landed, but he found no one else there, though he was certain he landed in the correct area. He patiently waited and not too long the rest of the squadron showed up and landed along side of Tom. By the hand of God he and the others made it safely into Africa. There began the African Champaign.

North African Campaign~WW II

Tom was also the first flier to enter into Normandy, France on D-Day and successfully returned his crew and plane back to their base untouched by returning fire from the enemy. There were many answered prayers.
