Henry Grady Barnard was born on March 9, 1907 in Glennville, Tattnall County, GA. He was the son of Ellis Levi Barnard and Georgia Moody, the daughter of Isaac Sharpe Moody and Celia Eugenia Perry. Henry’s mother died on July 6, 1902 at age 21, when Henry was 15 months old.
In the 1910 census Henry’s family was living with his grandfather, Jonathan Barnard in Appling Co., GA. Ellis is 32, widowed and his three children were with him. They are:
David Levi Barnard, age 7
Pearley ( Ruth Pearl), age 5
Henry G. , age 2
Ellis Barnard remarried Hattie McKenzie on Jan. 5, 1913. It can be assumed that Ellis and his children continued to live with his parents until he remarried. Ellis’ mother, Anna America Bacon Barnard died in 1914. Ellis died in 1924 at age 34 and is buried next to his mother.
In 1920 Henry Grady Barnard, age 12, was living with his father and step mother Hattie and was able to read and write. His grandfather Jonathan, age 75, was also living in the household.
Henry Grady Barnard married Emma McLendon on Jan 29, 1927 in Lake Co., FL. They were divorced in 1933. They had one child together, Opal J. Barnard, born 1928.
In 1930 Grady ( as taken down by the census taker ) was living in Eustis, Lake County, FL. He is 23 years old, a truck driver in the feed store industry. He was renting his house. He was married to Emma, age 29 and has a daughter Opal J. Barnard , age 2. According to the census he married her at age 20.
On July 23, 1933, Henry Grady Barnard married Edna Laura Dreggors. She was born on March 20, 1918, the daughter of Alexander and Lydia Dreggors ( Driggers) They had the following children:
