Orville Prentiss Nims was born Apr. 22, 1832 in Waterton, Jefferson Co., NY. He was son of Loyial and Sylvia Angell Nims. He was the son of Loyal Nims who removed to Hustisford in October, 1850 and bought 107 acres of wild, heavily timbered land; of this only one acre was cleared, on which was a log house; this wilderness was cleared and made a home.
He was a Civil War Veteran, First Heavy Artillery Co. G. entered Oct. 11, 1864 mustered out June 30, 1865, listed on the Nov. 28, 1863 draft list published in The Home League.

His brother Adolphus was killed at the battle of Perryville, William of the 38th Iowa died at Memphis, and Frank died at Nashville. His brother, Orville enlisted in the 1st Wis Heavy Artillery and was in and about the defenses of the Capitol, until June, 1865 when the battery returned. Mr Orville Nims being discharged from the Sickles Hospital Alexandria where he had been confined two or three months by sickness.
