He was born in Switzerland to Joseph Rosencrantz and Barbara. His family came to the United States between 1842 and 1846. They were in Georgia by February 1846 according to his wife's pension application.

His family can be found in the 1850 Thomas County, GA census. That part of the county became part of Colquitt County, GA. His family appears in the 1860 Colquitt County, GA census.

Joseph Rosencrantz enlisted in Co. H 29th GA Infantry Regiment, CSA on 10 November 1861. He was wounded on 9 September 1863 at the Battle of Chickamauga. He was shot through the leg just above the right ankle at that battle. During the war, he picked up a case of chronic diarrhea. He was sent home on furlough. He surrendered on 10 May 1865 at Tallahassee, FL. His oath of allegiance was signed on 14 May 1865 at Thomasville, GA. He signed with an x.

From his oath papers, he is described as being 5'6", with light hair, dark eyes, and a dark complexion.

In 1867 he registered to vote in Thomas County, GA. By 12 July 1870, he was living in Lowndes County, GA near Ousley, GA.

His death was brought on by the chronic diarrhea and the festering wound he picked up during the war.
