Obituary: On January 13 Mrs. Martha E. Earp of Grand Island, walked away from her home sometime between 8 o'clock in the morning and noon. She was traced to the river, and she undoubtedly jumped in and was drowned. She was 39 years old and 7 months of age. She leaves a husband and eight children to mourn her untimely fate. She was the daughter of William M. Hilton[Helton] of Chico, and grand daughter of Davie Eugart[Enyart] of Carrollton, Missouri. Some three years ago, when in about two weeks of maternity, she attempted suicide by taking laudanum and cutting both arms. At the time of the unfortunate circumstances above, she was within about six weeks of maternity, but her mind seemed all right. Mrs. Earp has been a devout member of the Christian Church since her sixteenth year and has been an exemplary wife, mother and neighbor[The Weekly Colusa Sun, Saturday, 18 Feb 1888].
