Ruby L. Casteel, 89, of Life Care Center of Greeneville, died Wednesday evening at the center.

Mrs. Casteel was a homemaker and the widow of the Rev. Elmer Casteel.

She was a member of the House of the Lord Church.

Her family noted that "she was a loving, kind, and courageous mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, always having a smile for those with whom she came in contact, putting others before herself."

Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law: Liz and Doyle Arwood of Greeneville, Martha and the Rev. Kenneth Harper, of Linville, N.C., Anita and Stanley Souder of St. Albans, W.Va., and Barbara Boyd of Greeneville; six sons and eight daughters-in-law: Elmer "Buck" Casteel Jr., and his wife, Euna Casteel, Bill and Regina Casteel, Phillip and Phyllis Casteel, Lynn and Kathy Casteel, Steve and Beverly Casteel, Dave and Ann Casteel, Rezetta Casteel, and Glenna Casteel, all of Greeneville; 34 grandchildren and their spouses: Jeff and Tammy Casteel, Tiffney and Darby Dye, Becky and Joe Johnston, Robin and Tim Mitchell, Jerry and Sherrie Casteel, Stanley Ray and Amanda Souder, Revonda and Jeff Quillen, John and Sheena Boyd, Annette and Chuck Harmon, Tammy and Ronnie Crum, Tim and Michelle Henderson, Sheila and Rick Elkins, Daniel and Tammy Casteel, Jennifer and Mickey Brown, Chuck Casteel, Roger and Kristen Casteel, Angel Collins, Sherri and Kevin Cuttler, Tonia and Miguel Leon, Christina Casteel, Terry and Christy Casteel, Dwayne and Rhonda Casteel, Kevin and Tanya Casteel, Joe and Mandy Casteel, Tara and Josh Fortner, Sandy Trotter, Ronnie Carver, Lori and Sam Huskins, Candice Harper, Amy and Patrick Caviness, Samantha Casteel, Casey and Brian Fillers, Kelly Arwood, and Alex Arwood; 32 great-grandchildren and a great-grandson-in-law: Megan Casteel, Derrick Casteel, Rachel Johnston, Rechelle Dye, Devin Dye, Brailey Dye, Tiffany Casteel, Brittney Casteel, Shelly and Jimmy Wilson, Brooke Harmon, Brittany Crum, Justin Casteel, Caleb Brown, Tucker Brown, Sienna Collins, Craig Cuttler, Selena Leon, Lorena Leon, Miguel Leon, Dakota Casteel, Allen Michael Casteel, Jared Casteel, Jaylen Casteel, Brandon Casteel, Callie Casteel, Chelsey Casteel, Christopher Huskins, Nathaniel Huskins, Bryon Dabbs, Alyssa Fillers, Riley Fillers, and Zoe Casteel; and two great-great-grandchildren: Kasey Wilson and Jacob Wilson; a sister: Nora Inman of Knoxville; and special friends of the family: the Rev. Jim Fillers, the Rev. Buster Shelton, the Rev. Amos Penley, the Rev. Gene Stills, the Rev. Edward and Wanda Malone, Lyle Smith, and the staff of Life Care Center of Greeneville.

She was a daughter of the late William and Jane Johnson Crum and was preceded in death by four sons: Freddie Casteel, Jim Casteel, Roger Levaughn Casteel, and Harold "Turk" Casteel.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. today at Kiser Funeral Home and other times at the home of Bill and Regina Casteel.

The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at House of the Lord Church with interment in River Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Kenneth Harper, the Rev. Jeff Casteel, and the Rev. Kevin Casteel will officiate.

The body will be taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
