"Flowers bloom in her garden and her spirit endures."

From the Sewanee Mountain Messenger, July 15, 2010"

Mary Louise (Cook) Barker, age 93 of Sewanee, died July 11, 2010, after a brief illness. She was born August 18, 1916, in Elma, N.Y. She spent most of her life in Detroit, Mich., where she met and married David S. Barker and gave birth to her only child, Douglas Cook Barker. She moved to Sewanee in 1980. She was a devoted member of Otey Memorial Parish Church, an avid gardener, flower enthusiast, and passionate player of bridge. She volunteered at the Hospitality Shop and was a proud member of the Sweet 16s, a group of Sewanee friends born in 1916. She was a fabulous cook, a diehard Atlanta Braves fan, a voracious reader and rarely met a crossword puzzle she couldn't conquer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dave; and younger brother, Robert "Bob" Cook. She is survived by her son, Doug (Linda) Barker of Sarasota, Fla.; two grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren.
