John was the son of Alan McRae and Lucy Brooke Saunders. He married Elizabeth Rowena Williamson in 1837, and they had at least five children: David, Honore, Lucy, Elizabeth and Mary Virginia. After her death, he married Sarah Agnes Saunders about 1847. They had at least two children, Saunders and Zerelda. After Agnes' death, he married Emily Sue Turpin in Virginia, and they had at least three children: Alan, Paul and Donald.
John enlisted as a Private in Company "F", 3rd Regiment, Richmond Local Defense Troops on 20 June 1863, and served until at least August 1864.
After the War, he farmed in Cumberland County. He died of "Old Age," per Cemetery records.
