Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 5 Jan 1871 p2: "John Bell Crockett, a grandson of Davy Crockett, was found murdered in his trading boat at Brady's Landing, 5 miles above Memphis, Tenn., Wednesday. His head was crushed with an iron bar, and his boat plundered. Probably the murder was committed for the purpose of robbing him. No clue has been obtained of the murderers."
