John Catlett was a son of John Catlet, (ye younger) and Sarah (Hawkins) Catlet.

On 12-Mar-1625/6, John was christened at Saint Peter's, Canterbury, England.

In England, John married (first) Miss Lucas. They were the parents of Nicholas Catlett and Thomas Catlett.

John Catlett became the third husband of Elizabeth (Underwood) (Taylor) Slaughter in January, 1663 in Rappahannock County., Virginia.

John and Elizabeth were the parents of John Catlett, Jr., Elizabeth (Catlett) Taliaferro, Sarah (Catlett) Taliaferro, and William Catlett.

John Catlett came in 1650 to the banks of the Rappahannock River, Virginia.

He was a colonel in the Colonial Militia of Rappahannock County. He was killed while defending the fort near Port Royal from the Indians in 1670 in Caroline County, Virginia.

He was a Vestryman of Sittingbourne Parish in Virginia; active in campaigns against the Indians; 1 of 3 Commissioners chosen to settle the boundary between Virginia & Maryland; Sheriff; and Presiding Justice of Rappahannock Co., Virginia.

John left an estate in Kent County, England. to provide an education for his children in England. John owned over 12,000 acres in Virginia with Ralph Rowzee, his half brother.

He was born in Sittingbourne (not a selection on Find-A-Grave), Kent, England, but baptized in Canterbury. He was actually the fourth John Catlett in the line, not the first, so he was not a Sr.

Col. John Catlett was the first English owner of the land that became known later as Ferry Farm, George Washington's boyhood home in Fredericksburg, VA (the location of the "cherry tree" story). Catlett never lived on the property, but was a land speculator.

Col. John Catlett was the great-grandfather of President Madison. Colonel John's son John's daughter Rebecca married Francis Conway. Their daughter, Eleanor Conway, was President Madison's mother.
