James was a civil engineer. In 1835 he and his step-son Daniel Beckel (who was now his assistant) went to Tuscarawas County, OH where they became engaged in the construction of public works projects - one being "The Great St Mary's Reservoir" for the Miami Canal. By 1844, James had returned to Maryland and was farming in Frederick County. That year he became associated with John Wernwag and Jesse Scholfield in the development and sale of Virginius Island at Harpers Ferry, WV. In 1846, he founded the Harpers Ferry and Shenandoah Manufacturing Company at Virginius.
