Clarence Cleveland "Dick" Brand, Jr. died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Friday, January 27th, 2012 at age 85.

Born on the beautiful island of Terra Ceia, FL to Cecelia and Clarence Cleveland Brand, Sr. on November 12, 1926, Dick grew up the youngest of five with his siblings Jack, Bessie, George and Randy. He attended grade school on the island and graduated from Palmetto High School. At age 18, in the midst of World War II, he joined the U.S. Merchant Marine. He served in the Atlantic Ocean front on the United States Army Hospital Ship "Acadia," which was later reassigned as an ammunitions carrier ship in the Pacific Ocean theatre.

After serving his country, Dick moved to Tallahassee and attended Lively Vocational-Technical School, where he met the love of his life Dorothy "Dot" Studdard. He married her on October 11, 1947 in Lakeview Baptist Church, and they enjoyed 64 years together. He is survived by his devoted wife; their sons Paul Wayman, Glenn, and Terry; 5 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
Dick freely shared all that he had - his warmth, his wisdom, his possessions - with those he loved, and treated even those he did not know with kindness, honesty and respect.

Dick had both a rich personal and professional life, spending more than forty years as a public servant. He first spent seven years with the City of Tallahassee (1949-1956) before he began working at the Leon County Property Appraisers office. He was promoted to Chief Deputy to the Property Appraiser in 1960 and was appointed as Property Appraiser by Gov. Bob Martinez on October 1st, 1987. He was then elected to the office in November 1988 and held the position until his retirement in 1992. Dick was credited with moving the county to a computerized mass appraisal system and was instrumental in establishing the Leon County Employees Credit Union (now the Tallahassee-Leon County Employees Federal Credit Union). In recognition of his significant contributions, a room in the Leon County Courthouse was named for him in 2008. The public and his employees will remember him as a fair and dedicated professional.
Several years later he returned to the water's edge, moving with Dot to their serene cottage on the Ochlockonee Bay. During all this time, he was an active and honored member of the Tallahassee Civitan Club as a founder of the chapter and president for multiple terms. He was also a member of Lake Ellen Baptist Church of Crawfordville, FL. If he was not helping others in some way, you could find him woodworking in his shop or gardening in the Florida sunshine.

Graveside service was held Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at Roselawn Cemetery.
