Nell Baskett Dorsey, 87, Henderson, died at 1:50 a.m. Sunday, July 11, 2010, at the St. Anthony's Hospice Lucy Smith King Care Center.

She was a daughter of the late Bessie B. and John L. Dorsey.

After two years of study at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va., Nell graduated from the University of Kentucky and then earned her master's degree in preschool education from the University of Louisville.

She was a lifelong advocate of early childhood education. After beginning her teaching career at Vogel Kindergarten in Henderson, she established her own Dorsey Kindergarten, which she operated for 25 years.

She was a lifelong member of The Presbyterian Church of Henderson and affectionately remembered being taken when a child to Sunday School by her grandfather, the late Judge John L. Dorsey, who then taught the Men's Bible Class.

Before her health declined, Nell also taught Sunday School, served as a deacon and elder, and was active in the women's programs. She took a layman's training class at the Presbyterian Seminary in Louisville to qualify for assistant pastoral duties.

She was a volunteer at Methodist Hospital, was an avid bridge player, an enthusiastic golfer and was skilled in needle crafts.

She will be remembered lovingly by her family and friends. Her family is especially grateful for the faithful and devoted caregivers she had for the past several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Elizabeth D. Sullivan; one brother, John L. Dorsey Jr.; one niece, Margaret W. Hodge; and one nephew, John Charles Sullivan.

Survivors include two sisters, Martha D. Hodge of Henderson and Nan D. Rand of Winston-Salem, N.C.; nine nieces and nephews, Glenn Ridley, Bill Sullivan Jr., and John P. Hodge, all of Henderson, Elizabeth Erdle and Julian A. Rand, both of Charlotte, N.C., Martha Keller of Northport, N.Y., Thomas Hodge of Duluth, Minn., Ann Curtis of Nashville, Tenn., and Janet Warner of Indianapolis; one sister-in-law, Betty Dorsey; two brothers-in-law, William L. Sullivan and Thomas Hodge, both of Henderson; and one cousin, Bebe Curry of Henderson. She also leaves more than two dozen great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at The Presbyterian Church of Henderson. The Rev. John Guthrie will officiate. Burial will be in Fernwood Cemetery.
