Lynette McCarthy, 88, Evenglow Lodge, Tjardes Health Center, Pontiac, former longtime resident of Bloomington-Normal, died at 5:15 a.m. Monday (Feb. 27, 2012) at the Health Center.

She was born March 31, 1923 in West Frankfort to Floyd H. and Mabel Anderson Nolen. She married Willard J. McCarthy on Feb. 8, 1947 in Grand Prairie, Texas. He survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Leah (David) Kopka, Bloomington, and Connie (Alfred) Letizio, Chelsea, Michigan; a son, Dr. Timothy (Barbara) McCarthy, Eden Prairie, Minnesota; six grandchildren and one brother, Don (Roberta) Nolen, Niceville, Florida. She was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Pat Nolen.

Lynette lived most of her childhood in Terre Haute, Ind., and graduated from Indiana State University in 1944 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in home economics and business. From 1944 to 1945, she taught business and home economics at Mooseheart High School in Aurora, IL. For the next two years she was a stewardess with American Airlines.

After marriage, Lynette worked as the assistant to the Dean at the University of Wisconsin–Stout while Willard finished college following World War II. Later, she assisted her husband with the publication of his textbooks and professional articles by typing and editing all of his manuscripts.

She was an expert seamstress and taught adult education classes in sewing for several years. When she wasn't sewing, she also found time to research her family genealogy, culminating in two family histories which she self-published.

Mrs. McCarthy moved to Normal in 1955 when her husband, Willard, accepted a position as professor of Industrial Technology at Illinois State University. She and Willard became residents of Evenglow, Pontiac, in March 2010.

She was a charter member of the Professional Home Economists of McLean County as well as Epiphany Catholic Church, McLean County Homemakers Extension Normal Unit, ISU Annuitants Association, and McLean County Genealogical Society.
