At the Battle of Shiloh (Pittsburg Landing), Tennessee, April 6-7, 1862, Cyrus was wounded in the left side by a piece of shell breaking two ribs. The widow's declaration in his pension file states that he died in September 1869 from the effects of the wound after having been constantly under medical treatment from the time of the wound until his death.
