José Joaquín Francisco María de la Guerra y Carrillo was born at Santa Bárbara, Alta California, México, where he was baptized at the Presidio Chapel October 17, 1822 (BP Baptism 00623). He was the son of Captain José Antonio Julian de la Guerra y Noriega, commander of the presidio, and María Antonia Juliana Carrillo y Lugo (SG Baptism 01314). Joaquín became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of sovereignty in 1848 and remained a resident of Santa Bárbara his entire life.
