Mrs Betsey F Ballou, "Sunshine Lady," Dies
Invalid Known for Happy Disposition, Succumbs at Home of Son
Mrs Betsey F Ballou, widow of Irvine W Ballou, who is widely known in the town as "Grandma Ballou" and the "Sunshine Lady," died last night at the home of her son Louis I Ballou of 158 Davis Street, with whom she lived for the past 30 years; born Florida; survivors were daughter Mrs Angie M. Jones of Altamont N.Y., three sons Louis of this town, Albert H. of Canon City, Col., and Ralph L. of Monroe who lives at the old Ballou homestead, where Mrs Ballou has always spent her summers; also leaves seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; member of Monroe Baptist church; one of the most loved members of the Women's Relief Corps; had been an invalid for the past 30 years; in 1914 she lost a leg by amputation and in 1917 lost the other and since that time has been happy in a wheelchair; her love of live and sunny manner have been an inspiration to both old and young who have come in contact with her [published Jan. 19, 1931 Springfield Republican]
