Robert Michael Darcy was the oldest son of Thomas Patrick Darcy and Mary Augusta Moodie Darcy from Creighton, Knox County, Nebraska.
Robert Michael was named for maternal and paternal grandfathers; Michael Darcy from Coon, County Kilkenny, Ireland and Robert Moodie from West Point, Dodge Co., Nebraska. He was born in Antelope County Nebraska fairly close to Creighton, Knox Co., Nebraska. As a young man he farmed. Later he loved telling of his experiences with horses and mules. At age 17 he operated the family farm while Thomas Patrick was on an extended visit to Ireland in 1921 (the year the Irish Free State was born).

Mabel's mother Elizabeth Mills Marcum had relatives in the Bloomfield area, where the Mills family is still present. Mabel attended public school in Creighton, from first grade to high school, until her junior year when the family moved to Plattsmouth, Nebraska. In 1923 Robert Michael and Mabel moved to Illinois (western suburbs of Chicago) where they lived, except for 2 years in Florida, for five decades and where their children grew up.

Robert Michael Darcy was a truck driver in Illinois and proprietor of trucking business, he contributed to Chicago area construction for many years. Later he worked 10 years as a storekeeper for a north-side Chicago hospital before retiring to live in northern Wisconsin. From 1945 (following Robert Michael and Mabel's divorce) Mabel worked in data processing for a division of General Motors, then returned to her original hometown, Chillicothe, Mo., for 15 years of enjoyable retirement until her death in 1984.
