Gene F. Swineford, 78, of the Ashland and Olivesburg areas passed away Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at Grant Medical Center in Columbus.

He was born Nov. 15, 1933, in Ashland to Kent and Pauline (née Witmer) Swineford.

Gene was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He served during the Korean War. Upon completing service with the U.S. Army, he worked as an auto body repairman and painter for 22 years before becoming a teacher at the Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center. Gene retired from the Pioneer Career and Technology Center after 24 years of teaching. He remained active after retirement, including work at Blust Rentals and a frequent attendee of his grandchildren's many activities. Gene was an active member of Olivesburg United Methodist Church, where he participated in the Men's Prayer Group, and he also attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Ashland.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy; daughters, Kelly (David) Bardeen, Lisa Young and Amy (Jim) Phillips; grandchildren, Matt and Taylor Bardeen, Tyler and Alyssa Young, and Nick and Tiffany Phillips; siblings, Forest (Iva) Swineford and Eva (Bruce) Bunte; sister-in-law, Janet Swineford; brothers-in-law, James Blust, William Blust and John (Sheila) Blust; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Clayton and Ina (née Wolfe) Blust; son-in-law, Robert Young; siblings, Gerald Swineford, Fern (James) McCullough and Roger Swineford; and sister-in-law, Julia Blust.

Family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, at the Ashland Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 308 Claremont Ave., Ashland. Funeral services will take place 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 508 Center St., Ashland, conducted by Pastors Jeff Messner and Adam Davis. Military graveside services conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Squad will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Olivesburg United Methodist Church or the Crestview Scholarship Fund.
