James Harvey Osborne was born near Roachdale, Putnam county, Indiana. He received his early education in the common schools of his native community and grew to manhood on the home farm. Later in his boyhood days, he entered Wabash College where he made an excellent record for scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1879. A Master of Arts degree was conferred on him by Wabash College in 1885.

Mr. Osborne was a student of law for 2 years in Crawfordsville, Indiana, before he began a career of teaching. He held the following positions at Wabash College: Assistant Principal in the Preparatory Department (1885-1893); Associate Professor of mathematics and Latin; and Professor of History. As an instructor he gave eminent satisfaction to all concerned and was a favorite with the hundreds of pupils who came under him. He was was both an instructor and entertainer in the school room; and kept fully abreast of the times in all that pertained to the subjects he taught.

Professor Osborne married Grace A. Insley on May 21, 1881. Three children were born to this union. The Osborne family lived in a home adjoining the campus of Wabash College; James Harvey also owned a productive and well improved farm in Putnam county.

Politically, James Harvey Osborne was a Republican, and a member of the Center Presbyterian Church where he was a ruling elder for nearly 20 years. Professor Osborne was a well rounded man, fully alive to the demands of the times, thoroughly informed on the leading questions before the public, and took a broad view of men and things.
