Arrived in New York on 13 Dec 1853 via the sailing ship Hansa with his family. They lived in Cleveland, OH until the Spring of 1854, then moved to Winnesheik Co, IA. In 1866 the family moved to Bridgeport Co, near Prairie Du Chien, WI. After his marriage in 1875 to Josephine Panka, Emanuel purchased his father's land. In the 1880 census he is listed as being a farmer and blacksmith. Around 1883 they moved to Duluth, St. Louis Co, Minn, where they owned and operated two grocery stores. While there seven additional children were born to them. In 1916 they moved to a farm in White Iron, near Ely, Minn. They had 14 children.
