Martin was a primary school teacher and an instructor in violin. His home was Lety #23. The village was formerly a part of Prachinskeho and Worlickeho estate, now the Plzen region. They left Bremen, Germany, and traveled on the ship HANSA. The trip took seven weeks. They arrived in New York on Dec 13, 1853. During the last week of December they reached Cleveland, Ohio. Martin was 45, Katerina was 39, Carl (Charles) was 13, Marie 11, John 6, August 3, and Emanuel 2. Katerina was pregnant with Anna during the trip. They traveled to Winneshiek Co, Iowa, where Martin purchased 40 acres for $50.00. It was recorded 29 Apr 1854. This land was east of Spillville. Martin and his family lived here until 1866. He then sold his property and moved to Bridgeport Township. He wanted to be close to his daughter Mary. He purchased 120 acres in Crawford Co, WI, for $750.
He and Katherine had seven children: Charles, Mary Schoeffer, John. Augustine Anthony, Emanuel Joseph, Anna Kappel, and Barbara.
