August came to American in June 1860 from Germany to New York aboard the ship, Hammona, and settled near Wathena (Washington Township), Kansas. He applied for naturalization in 1906 in Troy, Kansas.
He was a Corporal in Co. G 8th Kansas Infantry Regiment. After only a year in the US, he enlisted in 1861 and served for 7 years and 2 months.
On February 6, 1868, in Buchanan Co, Missouri, he married Julia (Kershstein) Kunisch, who had a daughter named Anna (Kunisch) Wolf (1865-1934).

ANOTHER VETERAN IS DEAD
August Schwope, 81 years old, a Civil war veteran, died at 3:50 o'clock Wednesday morning at his home in Wathena where he had lived fifty years. He was born in Germany and came to this country in 1860. He served in the Eighth Kansas infantry during the civil war.
He is survived by five daughters, Misses Ida and Augusta Schwope, Wathena; Mrs. William Wolf, Broken Arrow, Okla., Mrs. T. G. Fuhrman, Atchison, Kas., and Mrs. Minnie Duback, Troy, Kas., and three sons, A. L. Schwope, Follett, Texas; W. A. Schwope, Kansas City, and O. S. Schwope, Cummings, Kas. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Wathena Methodist church. Burial will be in Belmont cemetery.
