Daughter of Harvey and Sarah (Bowman) Hawley. She was born in Union TWP, Union County, Ohio, most likely on the old Hawley Farm on the Buck Run watercourse near Milford Center. She moved with the family to Bellefontaine where her father, brothers and mother died within a 10 year period, all of consumption. Census records show that she and her sister spent the majority of their lives living together. In 1874 Elizabeth graduated from Bellefontaine High School. In 1880 they were still in Bellefontaine. In 1899 she appears with her sister in Columbus, Ohio operating a business and living on E. State Street. For many years they operated a millinery business in Columbus. In later years the sisters lived on Oak Street in Columbus.
