AUTO KILLS QUAKER STREET GIRL NEAR HER HOME FRIDAY
Leonia Ammonds, the five year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Ammonds, of Quaker Street, was fatally injured by an automobile on the state road near her home late Friday afternoon. Leonia and her sister, Mable, had started to cross the highway to the White farm for milk when a westbound car forced; them back and upon its passing they again started to cross.

The older sister noticed a car approaching from the opposite direction and hesitated, while her little sister, Leonia, continued across the street.

The car advanced more rapidly than either had anticipated and the driver applied his brakes but the momentum carried him too far and though he tried to avoid hitting the child by turning to the left he was unable to stop the car and struck the girl with the right end of the bumper and right fender.

The girl was picked up and carried to the lawn of a neighbor where with help of a physician , who was passing by in an automobile, the unconscious little girl was cared for, then hurried to Duanesburgh to meet an ambulance summoned from Ellis hospital, Schenectady.

At the hospital it was found that in addition to several broken bones she had sustained a fracture of the skull from which she died an hour later.

The driver of the car gave his story of the accident to the sheriff of Schoharie county, who was passing shortly after the accident, and also reported to Justice Rector at Delanson, giving his name as Floyd Moore and address Youngsville, Pa. He with others, was on his way to Maine on a vacation trip. Upon his return he will be summoned to attend, the inquest of the death of little Leonia.

Funeral services were held at the home on Monday morning Rev. J. Mclntyre officiating. Undertaker Galen White had charge and burial was in Grove cemetery, Delanson.

The village mourns the loss of this bright little girl, and her friends expressed their sorrow and regard with a floral token, as did others.

It is to be regretted that the excellent highway through the village should invite speeding that endangers life, but so it seems, and grownups find they also must keep their heads in crossing.
