Son of John William and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Griffin Griffin.

James came to Shelby County when a small boy and resided in Shelby County most of his life. He lived for a short time in Monroe County and Texas. After the death of his father, Mr. Griffin was reared in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ross near Shelbina. He married Miss. Edith Mefford January 18, 1910. Mr. Griffin was a member of Hunnewell I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 302 for 51 years and was a charter member of Hunnewell Rebekah Lodge No. 309, organized 50 years ago. He had received the 50 year pin from the I.O.O.F. Lodge. He was also a member of the Christian Church at Hunnewell.

Death of James William Griffin
James William Griffin, 81, of this city, passed away at his home Saturday morning after an illness of several months.
Mr. Griffin was born Aug. 1, 1870, near Ten Mile in Macon county, a son of John W. and Elizabeth Griffin. He came to Shelby county when a small boy, resided in Shelby county most all his life. He lived for a short time in Monroe county and Texas.
After the death of his father he was reared in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ross, near Shelbina. He was married to Miss Edith Medford Jan. 18, 1910, and they observed their 42nd wedding anniversary last January.
Mr. Griffin was a member of the Hunnewell Odd Fellow lodge for 51 years and a charter member of the Hunnewell Rebekah lodge. He was also a member of the Christian Church.
Surviving are the widow, two daughters, Mrs. Eldon Harris of Monroe City and Mrs. James Griffin, of Hannibal, four grandchildren, a brother, Clark Griffin, of Shelbina, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son and a brother.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Christian church, with Rev. Jno. Golden officiating. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery with the Odd Fellow lodge conducting graveside rites. The Rebekah lodge attended in a body.
Mr. Griffin was a man of kindly and generous disposition, quiet and unassuming, yet ever willing to help a neighbor and friend.
