She was born in Murray, Utah and had a happy youth growing up with siblings and cousins nearby. She enjoyed high school and loved journalism and writing stories. She was a natural storyteller and had a great sense of humor.
She graduated from Murray High in 1939 and entered the St. Mark's Hospital (Salt Lake City) Nursing Program in 1942. Immediately following graduation, she enlisted in the Army Air Force Nursing Corp. She met her future husband while he was a patient. She served at Muroc Air Force Base (California) and in the European Theater. After the war, Mary came to Sweet Home, Oregon, married Jack Burrell and started her family. She worked at Langmack Hospital until 1967. Her nursing career took her to Alaska where she worked at the Alaska Pioneer Home in Sitka.
Mary enjoyed public service and community volunteering. She was active in PTA, blood mobile drives, Girl Scout Day Camp nurse, and school vaccination clinics while living in Sweet Home. She taught her children the importance of serving their communities.
Mary had many friends. People gravitated to her warmth, humor, energetic spirit, and positive attitude. She was a lot of fun.
She is survived by 2 sons: Jack Burrell (Karen) of Albany and Robert Burrell (Cathy) of St. Paul, Minnesota; her daughter Patricia Burrell of Lebanon; 5 grandchildren: Samantha Roshak, Adam Burrell, Chris Burrell, Mike Burrell, John Burrell; 5 great grandchildren: Mac Roshak, Gillian Roshak, Jack Burrell III, Shane Burrell, Emily Burrell.
At Mary's request there will be no service. Private burial will be at the Powell Cemetery in Berlin, Oregon
