Educator, Postmaster, and Farmer. Dan founded the Jasper Normal School and was the principal of the Tampa Grammar School. He married Miss Frieda Marie Bolling. Dan was the first postmaster of what would become the town of Elfers, Florida established on Dec. 14, 1909. His wife, Frieda chose the name Elfers because it was her mother's maiden name. Other residents entered names into a box but when the day came for a name to be drawn from the box, Frieda's was the one. A 1922 newspaper article reported that Dan Eiland was planting a five acre tract at Seven Springs, in early vegetables, and that his friends in Elfers missed him and they wished him success with his new venture. Dan and Frieda (Bolling) Eiland had the following children: Ruby who was in the first graduating class of Gulf High School in 1924 and subsequently taught at the Seven Springs school - Frederick "Fred" Daniel, a member of the GHS Class of 1928, m. Metta Hamilton (GHS '29). They later lived in Jacksonville - Dorothy at the young age of seven passed away due to an illness they believe she got from drinking bad water. Frieda and all the children got sick but Dan never did and that may have been because he only drank coffee and therefore the water Dan drank had always been boiled before he drank it and that would have killed any germs or bacteria that caused the rest of the family to get sick. For this reason, Dan was able to take care of his wife and children throughout their illness but Dorothy never recovered and died in 1921. Her parents and siblings were heartbroken and all carried the pain of losing her with them for the rest of their lives - Elizabeth "Beth" Lee - Archie Gilford living in Inglis in 2006 - Marvin Jones, born at their Seven Springs home on April 20, 1922. Rev. Marvin Jones Eiland became pastor of Curlew Baptist Church. In 2006, Rev Marvin and his wife were living at Inglis.
