James M. Bruce, 94, died August 5, 2005, in Atlanta, from complications of a fall. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Frances Gillespie Bruce, and two older brothers. He is survived by four daughters and a son: Carol Bruce and husband, Bruce Johnson, of Atlanta, Patsy Bruce Fisher and husband, Fred, of Atlanta, Joy Bruce Owensby and husband, Jake, of St. Louis, MO, Martha Bruce Thomas and husband, Larry, of Atlanta, and Jim Bruce and wife, Lynn, of Atlanta; and grandchildren, Anne Taylor; Andrew, Meredith, and Patrick Owensby; James M. Bruce, IV; and Emily Thomas. Mr. Bruce was born in Lavonia, GA on March 13, 1911, the youngest son of Thomas Benjamin and Nancy Alice Franks Bruce. He was raised in several Northeast Georgia communities, graduating from Cornelia High School in 1927. At age 12, he began part-time work with Southern Railway as a mail messenger and cleaning the Cornelia Depot's "Big Red Apple" statue. This started a career with Southern that lasted over 50 years, which included firing a 2-8-2 steam locomotive but was spent primarily in the Revenue Accounting Department. He managed several World War II emergency projects such as de-bottlenecking rail traffic waiting to be exported from the Port of New Orleans and arranging transportation for naval aviation cadets at Clemson University. He retired in 1976 but continued to work occasional consulting assignments and was a participant in the Norfolk Southern Thoroughbred Retirees Association. He was an active member of Saint John United Methodist Church for over 40 years. He enjoyed gardening, bird watching, walking, owning and training dogs, and spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He remained physically and mentally vigorous and independent until the last few months of his life.
