Mr. Carney was a longtime member of New Hope Presbyterian Church in the Norwood community and was also a member of the Kiwanis club.
Following a thirty-five year career in education, he was the retired principal of Norwood Elementary School where the gymnasium there, The William A. Carney Memorial Gymnasium, was named in his honor. He also taught at Fountain City Elementary School and Chilhowee Elementary School.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Addison Ross Carney and Merna Mae Himes Carney, and his loving wife of sixty-two years, Beatrice Williams Carney; four sisters; one brother.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Jan (Murph) Aymett of Powell, Patty Carney of Knoxville, Eddie Carney of Orlando, Florida, Becky (Don) Crippen of Halls, Terry Carney of Knoxville and Cathy Forester of Knoxville; grandchildren, Michael Aymett, Robby Carney, Stephanie and Travis Crippen, Stacey and Todd Turpin, Whitney (Anthony) Bagwell, Wesley and Jessica Forester and Natosha Forester; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate William's life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 12, 2012 at New Hope Presbyterian Church with Reverend Shirley Delap and The Reverend Dr. Bradley Palmer officiating.
Family and friends will meet at 1:15 p.m. Monday, February 13, 2012 at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, 2200 E. Governor John Sevier Highway, for a 1:30 p.m. graveside service with full military honors presented by the Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard.
The family will greet friends immediately following the service in the church hall.
