Obituary
Louisa Mabel Dunbar (nee Austin)
Louisa Mabel Dunbar (nee Austin) formerly of Tonasket, Wash., died at her home Friday, August 21, 2009, after a long battle with cancer. Ms. Dunbar was 72. Born in Portland, Ore., on January 19, 1937, she lived in Manila, Philippines, where her parents, Robert D. and Alma (Beard) Austin were stationed before WWII. She attended schools in Washington, D.C., Rossland, BC, Canada, and Boise, Idaho.
Ms. Dunbar spent many years raising her children in Skykomish and moved to the Tonasket area in 1993 and resided there until her death. It was a great joy to her that during the last years of her life, she was reunited with her eldest son, John Potvin, of Maryland. She treasured her relationship with her eldest grand-daughter, Shonda Shawver. At the end of her journey she was comforted to have her eldest daughter, Elizabeth, at her bedside.
Ms. Dunbar loved nature and prided herself in being independent and self-sufficient. She spent many of her days gathering berries and fruits for preserves and canning, raised her own chickens and goats and led a simple existence. She traveled to the Holy Land with her sister, Virginia, loved studying her family history, and collecting Wizard of Oz memorabilia. Louisa was a member of the Writers Society of Tonasket. She leaves behind five sons, John Potvin of Annapolis, Md., Richard Shawver of Carlotta, Calif., Michael Shawver of Skykomish, Wash., Timothy Shawver of Arcata, Calif., and Charles Mulvihill of Ione, Calif.; two daughters, Elizabeth Wilson of Arlington and Alyce Harris of Old Fort, N.C.; a sister Alyce Milstead of Boise, Idaho; three brothers, Robert Atkinson of Tiburon, Calif., Robert D. Austin, Jr., of Boise, Idaho, and John F. Austin of Boise, Idaho; former husband, Richard Mulvihill of Washington; 16 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Austin; her parents; her sister, Virginia Hutchison; and her first husband, Wallace Shawver.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, 2 p.m. at the Tonasket Senior Center, Tonasket, Wash. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society. Louisa, you have donned your ruby slippers, clicked three times, and now you are home.
Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel and the Okanogan County Crematory were entrusted with the arrangements.
