Harry R. Callahan, 71, of 206 Woods Avenue, Flemington, an employee of the New York and Pennsylvania Company half a century, and one-time Lock Haven Fire Chief, died yesterday, Sunday, January 4, 1959 in the Lock Haven Hospital.

Mr. Callahan had been ill since last July, suffering from cancer. He entered the hospital December 30 after a critical decline in health over the holiday season. He had been on leave of absence from his work for some months.

On October 31, 1958, “Mike” Callahan was retired and received a new five-year service button from NYPEN to recognize his 50 years with the company.

He had had a rather unusual work career, a life-time spent on the huge Number 5 machine which made variety paper, for offset and tablet purposes among others.

As a young man, on May 24, 1910, he went to work as a back tender on Number 5. In April 1916, he was promoted to machine runner, in which he continued until his retirement which occurred just short of half a century of continual association with one machine.

In making paper here in Lock Haven, a machine like Number 5 required the attention of four, and sometimes five men on each shift. Mr. Callahan’s responsibility was for production from the back operations of this machine.

In younger days, he had promoted sandlot ball teams. Raymond B. Bressler, Flemington resident who went on to be a big-league ball player, had his first taste of ball on teams Harry Callahan promoted.

Mr. Callahan was also an active fireman after 1920 when he joined the Citizens Hose Company in this city. Some years later he took his turn as fire chief in Lock Haven. With his residence in Flemington, he had also become a social member of Good Will Hose Company in the borough.

Mr. Callahan was born in Hublersburg and had lived in Flemington 50-some years. He was the son of the late William and Ida Callahan, and had made his home recently with a cousin, Miss Thelma Kessinger, a Flemington school teacher. His mother died about two years ago.

He was a member of the Flemington Methodist Church and the Loyal Order of Moose in Lock Haven.

Two sons, Charles W. of Bradford, and Harry R. (Mike), Jr., of Flemington; a brother, Ray M. Callahan, Lock Haven; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild survived.

Services were held at the Welsh Funeral Home, Lock Haven, with the Reverends James W. Garthoff and Gerald L. Wagner officiating.

Interment was in Highland Cemetery.
